about this story

What child doesn't wish to awaken one morning and receive the coveted invitation to Hogwarts? As she looked around the old victorian house her parents moved to in rural, generic, American farmland away from her home, she noticed the wooden embellishments and carvings seemed to notice her every move. She curiously moved through her new surroundings and wondered if this new place might be magical- did that owl on the stair post just blink? Her father assured her it had just been a long day with too much change and one too many chapters read in her favorite books. The next morning after her mundane trip on the long, orange school bus she arrived at a school with dated wooden furniture and views of the cornfields and farmland all around. As she stared off thinking of her beloved world of Harry Potter and wishing she were anywhere but the new school, she thought the saw the corn stalks rustle and reveal a secret path. The teacher called on her, jarring her back to reality as she was introduced to the class. She realized immediately her father was right- she'd been letting her imagination run away with her again. After school she went with her parents to pick up new things for the new house at the nearest strip mall, again a stark reminder of how mundane her new life would be. She whined to stay in the car, as disgruntled adolescents are prone to do. And while she sat in the parking lot, she noticed another child from her new school. She called out to wave, but as she did, the child pulled up their hood and hastened their pace. She looked down as she fumbled with the button to roll down the window and when she looked up, the child had disappeared. She looked around and saw no one. As her parents returned with their bags to load up and head home, she began to roll up her window. But as she did, she was sure she heard the cry of an owl.
