about this story

The day started like every other before it. I woke up early and stumbled to the kitchen to find something for breakfast. Two eggs and bacon. It never changes. As I put my dishes in the sink and looked out the window, I was taken aback when I saw the enemy infiltrating my lush, green lawn: a patch of Black-eyed Susans (BES). To some, they may be viewed as beautiful flowers, and they may be in the right setting, but in my backyard, they are the enemy and must be dealt with appropriately.

I quietly and covertly drove to my local co-op to gather intel on how I could completely eradicate them. I didn’t want BES to know they had been spotted. I received tips on how I could not only take the enemy out, but also fortify my home base. That evening, with a neat bourbon in hand and "Bombs Over Baghdad" quietly playing in the background, I wrote out my battle plan, ensuring that I would move efficiently and strategically.

Once the plan was set, my weapons of choice were readied. I polished my spade, prepared my trash bags, brushed off my lawn shoes, and laid out my uniform. Tomorrow was the day, and I would attack at dawn.

I woke up early and skipped breakfast. I needed to be alert and able to move swiftly without a meal slowing me down. I watched the sunrise, and as the first light crept across the yard, the yellow glow of the BES made them easy to detect.

Then I attacked.

It was an ugly battle, but a necessary one. I struck before they knew what was happening. After the attack, all that remained were a few small divots and the faint echoes of their screams lingering in the air.

Some may say I acted too harshly, while others understand the unfortunate position in which I was placed. But what I can say is this: 121 is now fortified. Barriers have been installed so that the seeds of the enemy can never spread across my lush lawn. But if they dare enter my territory again, I will be armed and forever ready for war.
